Shoulder Pain Physical Therapy in Hackensack, NJ
Shoulder Pain With a Clear Path Forward.
Lifters, overhead athletes, and active adults dealing with shoulder pain come to us when pressing has been off the table and nothing they've tried has given them a clear answer or a path back.

Shoulder Pain That Stops You From Pressing Isn't Getting Better With Rest.
Rest Took It from a 7 to a 5. Then It Came Back.
Rest reduces inflammation and calms the acute response. It doesn't fix the mechanical factors driving your shoulder pain. The moment you go back to pressing, those factors are still there. The pain returns.
Avoiding Overhead Just Gives the Problem Somewhere to Hide.
Removing overhead press from your program buys time. But the impingement pattern, the tissue restriction, the rotator cuff imbalance — none of those go away on their own. They wait for you to come back.
Generic Rotator Cuff Exercises Aren't the Full Answer.
External rotation with a band is a place to start, but it's not a plan. Without identifying the full movement pattern — thoracic mobility, scapular mechanics, tissue quality — band exercises address a symptom, not a cause.
A Full Shoulder Assessment. Not a Generic Protocol.
The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body, and its pain is rarely simple. At Ethos, every session is 60 minutes of hands-on care with a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist who looks at the full picture before treating any part of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from active adults dealing with shoulder pain before their first visit.
Do I need imaging or a referral before coming in?
No referral is required — New Jersey allows direct access to physical therapy. Imaging can be helpful context if you have it, but it's not required to start. A thorough hands-on assessment often tells us more about what's driving your pain than an MRI alone.
Can I still lift while dealing with shoulder pain?
In many cases, yes — with smart modifications. We'll identify what's tolerable and what needs to come out temporarily, and we'll work on the shoulder while keeping you as active as possible. The goal is to keep you training, not to bench you while we figure things out.
I had surgery. When can I start PT?
Timing depends on your specific procedure and surgeon's protocol. Early post-surgical PT generally focuses on range of motion and tissue health before progressing to strengthening and return-to-activity work. If you have clearance or a note from your surgeon, bring it and we'll build the plan from there.
How is this different from what I've tried before?
Every session at Ethos is one-on-one for 60 full minutes with a DPT and Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. No aides, no generic handouts. The assessment looks at your full shoulder mechanics — not just where it hurts — and treatment is specific to what we find.
Do you accept insurance?
Ethos Physical Therapy is a cash-based, self-pay clinic. We do not bill insurance directly. We can provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and we submit OON claims as a courtesy through Reimbursify at no cost to you. HSA and FSA payments are accepted.
